Dalia(daliya) Khichdi :
Dalia(daliya) means broken wheat in English and fada in Gujarati. Dalia Khichdi (Fada ni khichdi) is a savory porridge made with broken wheat and mixed vegetables. This one-pot meal can be made using an instant pot or pressure cooker. It doesn’t require any heavy accompaniments at all. Just serve this wholesome meal with plain curd and papad for lunch or dinner and Enjoy.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Dalia (broken wheat/fada) |
1/4 cup split Yellow Moong Dal (or split green moong dal) |
1-2 tablespoons Oil |
1 small piece of Cinnamon (dalchini), optional |
2 Cloves (laung/lavang), optional |
1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera) |
1/4 teaspoon Hing (asafoetida) |
1 small Onion, chopped (approx. 1/3 cup) |
1 small Potato, chopped (approx. 1/2 cup), optional |
1/2 cup chopped Brinjal (eggplant), optional |
1/4 cup Green peas |
1/4 cup chopped Carrot |
1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder |
Salt, to taste |
2 cups Water |
Directions:
1. Wash 1/2 cup dalia (broken wheat/fada) and 1/4 cup split yellow moong dal (or split green moong dal) together in water. Chop onion, potato, brinjal (eggplant) and carrot into small pieces. You can use any vegetable of your choice in this recipe.
2. Heat 1-2 tablespoons oil in a 3-liter capacity pressure cooker over medium flame. Add 1 small piece of cinnamon, 2 cloves, a pinch of hing (asafoetida) and 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter. Add 1 small chopped onion (approx. 1/3 cup) and sauté until onion turns translucent.
3. Add 1/2 cup chopped potato (1 small), 1/2 cup chopped brinjal (eggplant), 1/4 cup chopped carrot and 1/4 cup green peas.
4. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes.
5. Add 1/2 cup washed dalia, 1/4 cup washed split yellow moong dal, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder and salt to taste.
6. Mix well. Stir and cook for a minute.
7. Add 2 cups water. Close the lid and cook for 5-6 whistles over medium flame. Turn off the flame. Let the pressure release naturally.
8. Open the lid and mix the dalia khichdi. Taste it for the salt and add more if required. Dalia Khichdi is ready.
Tips and Variations:
- To cook Dalia Khichdi In Instant Pot – Follow the steps from 1 to 7 and do all the process in sauté mode. Then add 2 cups water and close the lid. Cook it in manual high-pressure mode for 8 minutes. Then let the natural pressure release for 10-12 minutes before opening the lid.
- Time required to cook dalia depends on the quality of it. Sometimes it takes more time to cook.
- Add other vegetables like tomato, green beans, broccoli, and spinach for variation.
- To make the spicy khichdi, add 1 green chili or ½ -1 teaspoon red chili powder and 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder.

Serving Ideas: Dalia Khichdi (Fada ni khichdi) can be served hot as a brunch. Serving it with cucumber raita or mint raita accomplishes its taste very effectively.
